Setup Reference Values for EQuIS WQX Package

Multiple fields and tables will need to be populated to ensure that WQX values are being translated to EQuIS values and vice-versa. This is important when importing and exporting WQX data into EQuIS. Users must decide whether to upload WQX-specific reference values into the EQuIS reference tables or to setup appropriate remapping to achieve WQX ready data exports or a combination of both.

WQX Reference Values

Use the EQuIS WQX-refvals Format to populate the reference tables and fields added to the EQuIS database by the EQuIS WQX Schema. This format is used to load WQX-specific reference values into the database. An example EDD with WQX reference values (WQX refvals for WQX-refvals format.xlsx) is included in the EQuIS WQX package to use with this format. See the Installation and Configuration article to obtain the WQX-refvals.zip file and WQX refvals for WQX-refvals format.xlsx file. The EQuIS WQX Schema must be applied to the EQuIS database intended to use WQX data for the WQX-refvals format to work properly. The example EDD can be modified and loaded using the WQX-refvals format in EDP.

Note: The EQuIS WQX-refvals format is intended to be populated with values from the reference table files distributed on the USEPA’s WQX website. WQX reference value comma-separated (CSV) files are provided by the USEPA and can be accessed through any of the WQX template data dictionaries. The WQX reference values format (WQX-refvals.zip) is optional and is used to facilitate consistency between the WQX and EQuIS Schemas. Remapping imported data in EDP is another feasible option to bridge the two schemas (refer to the WQX Remapping section below for more detail).

WQX Remapping

A solution to integrating reference values where an internal code might differ from an external code is remapping those specific values in Professional. This is especially useful when trying to standardize code in the database. For example, WQX uses “Glossiphoniidae” as their taxon code, which may correlate to another code such as “Annelids_Freshwater” in the RT_TAXON table. Instead of introducing several new reference values to a database, remapping new reference values that correlate to already existing EQuIS reference values promotes good data governance in code conformity. An example remap EDD (WQX remap example.xlsx) is provided in the format package to demonstrate the basic concept of remapping using the standard refvals format. More information on remapping using EDP can be accessed from the Remap article.

Suggestions for populating fields in the remap tables are provided below.

RT_REMAP

•REMAP_CODE – Populate this field with WQX Remap (STATUS_FLAG set to 'A').

•REMAP_DESC – This field can be populated to describe the remap code being applied.

RT_REMAP_DETAIL

•REMAP_CODE – Should match what was used in RT_REMAP.REMAP_CODE.

•EXTERNAL_FIELD – Populate with the EQEDD_WQX Format Section Name.Field Name or just the field name (e.g., TestResults_v2.lab_anl_method or lab_anl_method_name).

•EXTERNAL_VALUE – Populate with the value that will be submitted to the EPA (e.g., 2130).

•INTERNAL_VALUE – Populate with a valid internal RT_ANALYTIC_METHOD.ANALYTIC_METHOD (e.g., Turbidity).

Notes:

•The WQX remap workflow used in the reports is currently under modification. Not all fields can be remapped and remapped fields must be populated with the table from which they are generated. For example, RT_REMAP_DETAIL.EXTERNAL_FIELD would need to be populated as DT_TEST.ANALYTIC_METHOD to apply the remap code in the report parameters. EarthSoft is addressing this so that remap codes are applied consistently throughout all EQuIS reports.

•Not all reports contain a remap code parameter. EarthSoft is modifying the reports so that all reports can have a remap code applied.
