DQM Checks for Blank Contamination

Qualify results in associated samples if blanks are contaminated. The first option is the general Blank Contamination check which covers all types of blank samples (Field, Lab and Trip) in one check.

 

There are also separate blank checks for each of the different sample types. These qualifying checks have the same parameters and operate in the same manner as the general Blank Contamination check. The difference is the separation by types of blank sample to allow for assigning type-specific qualifiers.

 

If the general Blank Contamination check is selected together with a type-specific blank check(s):

DQM will apply only one of each type of check to avoid duplicate violations in the report output.

The selected type-specific check(s) will be run using the parameters and qualifiers in Settings for the specific check(s).

The general check will be run for any remaining types of blanks using the parameters and qualifiers for the general check.

 

Option 1: Blank Contamination (no longer included in the DQM Demo EDD)

 

The check name is EarthSoft.DQM.BlankContamination. This check uses the REPORTABLE_RESULT, RESULT_TYPE_CODE and TEST_BATCH_TYPE parameters from Global Parameters. There are nine other parameters and they are:

LabBlankSampleType – defaults to LB.

MethodBlankSampleType – defaults to MB.

AmbientBlankSampleType – defaults to AB.

EquipmentBlankSampleType – defaults to EB.

FieldBlankSampleType – defaults to FB.

TripBlankSampleType – defaults to TB.

Multiplier – used in test to determine if result can be qualified as non-detect - defaults to 5 if no value supplied.

Common_lab_multiplier – depends on CAS_RN – default multiplier is used if no value supplied.

Flag_blank – if TRUE, the blanks are also qualified – defaults to TRUE.

 

Using a value for multiplier from RT_DQM_CONTROL_LIMITS is discussed in more detail here.

 

Notes:

The default value is used if there is no record in RT_DQM_CHECK_PARAM for an input parameter.

The default value is used if the PARAM_VALUE is NULL for this parameter in RT_DQM_CHECK_PARAM.

 

There are three rules:

1.BLANK CONTAMINATION = Qualify the result in the blank sample if a concentration is detected and the FLAG_BLANK parameter = TRUE.

2.RESULT > BLANK * MULTIPLIER = Qualify an associated result if sample result > multiplier * concentration detected in the associated blank.

3.RESULT < BLANK * MULTIPLIER = Qualify an associated result if sample result < multiplier * concentration detected in the associated blank. Assuming the qualifier for this rule = “U”, then this will indicate the result is non-detect. When saving qualifiers, there is also an option to set DETECTED_YN to "N" for all results with a "U" qualifier.

 

The original Blank Contamination Check has been separated into three checks, one for each type of blank sample. The original Blank Contamination Check will still function.

 

Option 2: Field Blank Contamination

 

The check name is EarthSoft.DQM.FieldBlankContamination. This check uses the following parameters:

AmbientBlankSampleType

EquipmentBlankSampleType

FieldBlankSampleType

Multiplier – used in test to determine if result can be qualified as non-detect - defaults to 5 if no value supplied.

Common_lab_multiplier – depends on CAS_RN – default multiplier is used if no value supplied.

Flag_blank – if TRUE, the blanks are also qualified – defaults to TRUE.

 

Associated results are found by:

1.Matching samples by FIELD_SDG. If matching samples are found, the process stops.

2.If no matching samples are found, samples are matched by CHAIN_OF_CUSTODY (COC).

3.If no matching samples are found, samples are matched by TEST_BATCH_ID.

 

Note: To use the TEST_BATCH_ID, it must be added to DT_TEST_BATCH and then the TEST_ID of the blank sample and all of the associated TEST_IDs are added with their TEST_BATCH_ID and TEST_BATCH_TYPE to AT_TEST_BATCH_ASSIGN (usually done by EDP format).

 

Option 3: Lab Blank Contamination

 

The check name is EarthSoft.DQM.LabBlankContamination. This check uses the following parameters:

LabBlankSampleType

MethodBlankSampleType

Multiplier – used in test to determine if result can be qualified as non-detect - defaults to 5 if no value supplied.

Common_lab_multiplier – depends on CAS_RN – default multiplier is used if no value supplied.

Flag_blank – if TRUE, the blanks are also qualified – defaults to TRUE.

 

Associated results are found by:

1.Matching samples by LAB_SDG. If matching samples are found, the process stops.

2.If no matching samples are found, samples are matched by TEST_BATCH_ID.

 

Note: To use the TEST_BATCH_ID, it must be added to DT_TEST_BATCH and then the TEST_ID of the blank sample, and all of the associated TEST_IDs are added with their TEST_BATCH_ID and TEST_BATCH_TYPE to AT_TEST_BATCH_ASSIGN (usually done by EDP format).

 

Option 4: Trip Blank Contamination

 

The check name is EarthSoft.DQM.TripBlankContamination. This check uses the following parameters:

AmbientBlankSampleType

TripBlankSampleType

Multiplier – used in test to determine if result can be qualified as non-detect - defaults to 5 if no value supplied.

Common_lab_multiplier – depends on CAS_RN – default multiplier is used if no value supplied.

Flag_blank – if TRUE, the blanks are also qualified – defaults to TRUE.

 

Associated results are found by:

1.Matching samples by COC. If matching samples are found, the process stops.

2.If no matching samples are found, samples are matched by FIELD_SDG.

 

Unit Conversions

 

These checks all include an internal unit conversion function, which allows blanks (such as trip blanks) with units for liquids to be compared to results for soil samples. This internal function includes:

ug/L to mg/kg

ug/L to ug/kg

mg/L to mg/kg

mg/L to ug/kg

 

Any combination of units found in RT_UNIT_CONVERSION_FACTOR will also be used.

 

The following error occurs if the units differ and none of the above conversion factors apply:

 

Associated result (. . . .  has units (. . . .) that do not convert to units of blank result (. . . .).  

For this check to work, a record must be added to RT_UNIT_CONVERSION_FACTOR for that combination.
