E-Data refers to data that is available in a usable electronic format.

Most analytical laboratory data is now available in an electronic format. Although geologic data is moving in this direction, paper formats, such as field notebooks and paper logs, are much more common. Many people who start using EQuIS Geology start with a stack of borehole logs that have to be converted, one way or another, into an electronic format.

It should be noted, however, that not all electronic data is usable. For example, if a laboratory scans a paper report and emails that report to you, that is not considered E-Data. It is electronic data, but only in the most generic use of the term. It is not paper. It is an image, but an image cannot be loaded into EQuIS as usable data. A scanned image has limited use in terms of presentation, analysis, and modeling of data.
